After an exceptionally hot summer, autumn is gently in. The Foundation shares updates with you regarding the start of the new season, specifically concerning its participation in major European congresses: those of the European Society for Dermatological Research (ESDR) and the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV).

René Touraine Lecture – ESDR 2026

The René Touraine Lecture, presented at the ESDR was established in 2004. Many internationally renowned researchers have delivered this lecture since its inception.

The 55th ESDR Congress took place from September 9 to 12 in Heidelberg, Germany; this year, the René Touraine Lecture was delivered by Klara Mosterd (Professor and Head of the Department of Dermatology at Maastricht University, Netherlands) on the topic “Cut the knife! Different pathways towards less invasive skin cancer care” (September 12).

Prof. Dr. Klara Mosterd is a dermatologist and Head of the Dermatology Department at the Maastricht UMC+ Comprehensive Cancer Centre in the Netherlands. She is a Mohs surgeon whose clinical work focuses on multidisciplinary care for high‑risk skin cancer and patients with Basal Cell Nevus Syndrome. Her research centres on optimising care for patients with keratinocyte carcinomas and their precursors, with particular emphasis on non‑invasive diagnostics and treatment approaches that reduce the burden of invasive procedures. 

Prof. Mosterd received her medical degree and specialist training in dermatology in the Netherlands and has established an internationally recognised research programme in oncodermatology. In 2022, she was appointed Full Professor of Oncodermatology. She serves as principal investigator for numerous multicentre randomised controlled trials evaluating care for basal cell carcinoma and actinic keratosis, generating key evidence that informs clinical guidelines. Her work has been instrumental in establishing non‑invasive diagnostic and treatment techniques as robust alternatives to invasive procedures. Among other contributions, her research supported the international implementation of optical coherence tomography (OCT) as a non‑invasive diagnostic tool for skin cancer. Her research is funded by several organisations, including the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development.

RENÉ TOURAINE LECTURE – EADV 2026

The René Touraine Lecture at the EADV was established in 2012. Many internationally renowned researchers have delivered this lecture since its inception. 

The EADV Congress will take place from September 30 to October 3, 2026, in Vienna, Austria; this year, the René Touraine Lecture will be delivered by Michel Gilliet (Professor and Head of the Department of Dermatology in Lausanne, Switzerland) on the topic “Personalized treatment for skin IMIDs” (October 3).

Dr. Michel Gilliet is the Head of the Dermatology Department at the University Hospital CHUV in Lausanne, Switzerland. He completed his dermatology training at the University of Zurich and received research training in immunology at the DNAX Research Institute in Palo Alto, California. In 2004, Dr. Gilliet was recruited by MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, where he held clinical appointments in Dermatology and basic and translational science appointments in Melanoma Oncology and Immunology.

In 2010, Dr. Gilliet returned to Switzerland as a Full Professor and Head of the Dermatology Department in Lausanne. His research primarily focuses on immune responses in inflammatory skin diseases. His laboratory has notably uncovered mechanisms by which dendritic cells initiate and sustain skin inflammation by sensing DNA in complex with antimicrobial peptides. These groundbreaking studies have led to a paradigm shift in understanding how inflammation is regulated in injured skin and diseases such as psoriasis and lupus erythematosus. More recently, his lab has expanded its research to include the application of molecular omics technologies in clinical dermatology practice, providing a new framework for diagnosing and treating skin diseases.

SPIN SYMPOSIUM  – EADV CONGRESS 2026

IT’S COMING!

2 weeks left until SPIN’s session at the 2026 European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Congress in Vienna, Austria!                                                               

Join us on Septembre 30th, 2026 from 8h30 until 10h00am CEST at the Austria Center Vienna – Hall B (Level 2).

This session will explain the concept of Core Outcome Set (COS). 

Firstly we will demonstrate the importance of COS which aims at harmonizing the measurement of outcomes in clinical trials to improve clinical practice and reducing research waste.

Secondly, we will present the manual that has been made for the development of the core domain set and the core instrument selection of the COS.

Thereafter results of a review focussing on dermatology-specific patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) will be presented. 

Finally we will focus on examples of COS in dermatology and what we can learn from them for the future. We will introduce you to the global COS initiatives for COSEB (Core Outcome Set for Epidermolysis Bullosa), HiSTORIC (Hidradenitis Suppurative Core Outcome Set International Collaboration), and HOME (Harmonizing Outcome Measures for Eczema).
